Umajiyama is quarried near the Ohira mine in Kyoto. The stones are medium-hard, about 3/5, which makes them easy to work with and forgiving, even for those without extensive experience with natural stones. They work quickly and easily build up their own slurry, making sharpening both effective and intuitive.

The kasumi that Umajiyama produces can be described as softly hazy, a gently foggy kasumi rather than the strong and scratchy contrasts that harder stones often provide. The stone is suitable both as a final finish or as a step before finer polishing. The edge achieves a nice balance between high polish and good bite. We recommend it!
