Microplane started its business by manufacturing rasps for carpenters and woodworkers. But one day in 1994, a Canadian housewife was making orange cake. Frustrated with her grater, she instead fetched her husband's wood rasp and discovered that it was the perfect grater.

All Microplane graters are made for professional use and consist of many small, razor-sharp edges that are etched instead of stamped as on traditional graters.
