Microplane started its business by manufacturing rasps for carpenters and joiners. But one day in 1994, a Canadian housewife was making an orange cake. Frustrated with her grater, she instead fetched her husband's wood rasp and discovered it was the perfect grater.

All Microplane graters are made for professional use and consist of a multitude of small, razor-sharp edges that are etched instead of stamped, as on traditional graters.
